Family basketball tournament to raise funds for local charities

Local families are being invited to take part in a charity basketball tournament, organised by South Oxfordshire Heat Basketball Club (SOHBC) to be held at Better's White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre on Saturday 16th June 2018.

Up to 16 teams of three will be taking part and while each team should comprise family members, any team fielding a "ringer" will still be allowed to compete, but will receive penalty points. The cost of entry is £30 per team and teams are being encouraged to raise sponsorship for their charity of choice with an additional £250 going to the winning family's charity of choice and a further £150 going to the wooden spoon team's preferred charity. The venue costs are being covered by leisure operator Better and South Oxfordshire District Council's Go Active programme.

The SOHBC Trustee Shiv Mahalingham commented: "The tournament is nice way to encourage participation in sport across generations whilst raising awareness for key charities that are personal to those families. We are grateful to Better and South Oxfordshire Council for their support and are looking forward to an exciting tournament."

Megan Horwood, Community Sports Manager for Better, said "We are delighted to host this tournament organised by SOHBC. It would great to full all 16 spaces to help raise funds for participants chosen charities. We have had the pleasure to work with SOHBC on a number of projects including their Youth League and Wheelchairs Basketball Team."

Emma Freeman, GO Active Juniors Co-ordinator, said "This is a great opportunity to bring together families across the District to compete as a family. We are excited to be involved in such a project. If you're looking to get the family active, get in touch!"
